BIID is the acronym for Body Integrity Identity Disorder. (Quoted with permission.) "I specifically came up with this name in order to be parallel with the term “Gender Identity Disorder”, which I believe is at least conceptually related to BIID. ”Gender Identity Disorder” implies that there is a disorder in the establishment of gender identity. The name “BIID” assumes that there is an analogous function called “body integrity identity” and that it is disordered in BIID in the sense that it deviates from anatomical reality." Dr. First continues, "When I did my original study, I did interview two people who wanted to be paraplegic using my amputation-focussed interview (changed the questions from amputation to paraplegia) and the paraplegia version seems pretty much the same as the amputee version. Of course, since I only interviewed two people this is a bit speculatiive." - As cited by Sean O'Connor http://transabled.org/thoughts/an-email-exchange-with-dr-first-about-biid.htm For those of you wondering who Dr. First is, he is the person that came up with BIID.
Even though there is this quote and the address to find out more, I will leave the below text unchanged.
BIID is when your Body Integrity Identity, which is your mind's percieved view of your body, does not match your body itself. In the past, the only legal part of BIID was that of amputation: the amputation of one or more limb(s). That is changing, and now people are beginning to consider paraplegia, blindness, deafness, quadriplegia, and anything else where your body does not match your mind. People that have BIID often suffer from depression because the medical community is unwilling to operate unless under extreme circumstances.
An important thing to note is that BIID does not include people who are transexual, which is GID, nor does it include devotees, who are people who are sexualy attracted to people with disabilities.
A common name for BIID is transable, which just happens to be part of the name of this site. A common name for transable is wannabe, short for want-to-be. People who may or may not know what they are saying call this entire group of people DPW, devotee pretender wannabe. Please note that the three are very different, but can all happen in the same person.
